This is Trudy, my new sky blue 1973 Schwinn Suburban. I found her on Craigslist, and it was love at first sight. I had been shopping around for a vintage Schwinn cruiser or a 3- or 5-speed model (this one is a 5-speed), but as soon as I saw this color I knew I had to have it. As for the name, Trudy just seemed to fit--it brings to mind the type of smart, stylish 1970s co-ed that might have been seen riding just such a bike around campus (in short-shorts and oversized sunglasses, of course). Bartok seems to like her, too:

I can see it now! She's a beaut, and I'm very jealous. Bikes are on our registry, but when we don't get those (who buys a bike as a wedding present?), I might begin a search for something similarly sexy.
ReplyDeleteP.S. You may already be aware of this, but Peaceful Night is but one shade away from Veridian Green, the exact color of my kitchen.
She is lovely, though she's probably not the absolute most practical bike I could have bought. She's a little too big, for one thing (what I really need is a 24" bike, but almost all vintage Schwinns I found were 26"). The seat is also a tad uncomfortable, but I don't plan to take her on very long rides, so it should be okay. I'm probably going to add a wire basket to the back, and then she'll be great for trips to the grocery store and such.
